Once again, you can see us on the attack at my Underground Strength Gym, using bodyweight workouts for our high school wrestlers. I always tell high school wrestlers that they should be GREAT at bodyweight exercises such as push ups, pull ups and hard running. I thought that stuff was in a wrestler’s blood?
Maybe I was wrong, because when I visit wrestling clubs or when a new high school wrestler begins training with me they are almost always very weak at these 3 critical exercises.
You can’t be a GREAT wrestler and also be a WEAK wrestler, the two just don’t go hand in hand. Ya gotta get stronger, faster and more conditioned if you want to be dominate the competition.
Making a lil’ debut is some odd object training using kegs. We love using kegs because the sloshing around of the water REALLY intensifies the difficulty of using kegs.
Rather than making excuses for not having sandbags, kegs, etc. – why NOT be resourceful and make these training tools for yourself or the wrestlers on your team?
Sandbags are cheap as dirt to make, kegs are often times given away or cost $10-20 as a recycling fee. Drive through a college town, I bet a Frat House has them lying around in the backyards 🙂
Wrestling Workouts should be fun AND effective. Even though we attack our workouts I keep it FUN. Wrestling is stressful enough so I like getting the kids to have fun when they train. They forget they’re working so hard, ha ha 🙂
The use of bodyweight and odd objects is a winning combination, specifically, when performed with proper technique. You can hear me constantly pushing these high school wrestlers to use proper technique, just as you would during a wrestling practice.
